British Runner Wins Bronze Medal in European Marathon Championships Despite Last-Minute Shoe Emergency
Abbie Donnelly overcame a shoe emergency to win a historic bronze medal in the European Marathon Championships, becoming the first British woman to achieve this feat.

British runner Abbie Donnelly has made history by winning a bronze medal in the European Marathon Championships, despite a last-minute shoe emergency.
Donnelly, who is also pursuing a part-time PhD at Loughborough University, realized her mistake the night before the marathon in Birmingham when one of her race shoes felt off. She had brought two different sized shoes to the race by accident, and her parents and boyfriend were scrambling to get the correct shoe to the start.
The replacement shoe arrived with little time to spare, just half an hour before the race. Donnelly's boyfriend put the chip on her shoe during this time, as she was flustered.
Despite the chaos, Donnelly went on to finish third in 2:27:33, helping Great Britain earn team gold. The eight-lap course through Birmingham featured plenty of hills, which led runners to fight for position repeatedly.
Donnelly described the race as "a really tough race, both just the course and the tactics of it." She said that there was a lot of surging because of the hills, but she was pleased with how it turned out.
Donnelly's medal was not a given, and she described it as an "optimistic dream." The unusual course, which reminded her of cross-country, may have played to her strengths. It was also her first time racing a marathon in a championship setting.
Donnelly's focus during the race was on the athletes around her, rather than following pacemakers and worrying about splits. She said, "I didn’t think about the time, I was aware of where I was in the pack."
Donnelly is balancing her running career with her PhD research, which examines popular imperialism and British culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Unfortunately, she has very little time for a proper post-race victory lap, as her thesis is due in six weeks.
