Emilie Mann, a 34-year-old Canadian ultra-trail runner from Kelowna, British Columbia, is gearing up for one of the most demanding events in her sport: a 174-kilometer race through the French Alps. The course, which boasts over 9,900 meters of elevation gain, requires both physical and mental endurance. Mann's goal is to stay present and focused throughout the race, drawing on her extensive training and preparation.

Training for Mountain Terrain

Mann's preparation involves a combination of logging miles, carefully choosing tune-up races, and incorporating specific training to mimic the race's challenging terrain. She aims to build "time on feet" through long training runs, hikes, and even her 12-hour shifts as a part-time respiratory therapist. By doing so, Mann hopes to develop the endurance needed to tackle the French Alps' rugged terrain.

Confidence Underfoot

Choosing the right trail shoe is crucial for Mann, who has opted for the Merrell Agility Peak 6. She prioritizes comfort, citing the importance of having a shoe that won't require mid-race changes. The Agility Peak 6 features a FloatPro foam midsole and Vibram Megagrip outsole, providing energy return and traction on various terrain. Mann appreciates the shoe's durability and lightness, which enables her to feel fast and confident on the trail.

More Than Mileage

Mann's preparation extends beyond training and footwear. She has increased her caloric intake, focusing on carbohydrates, and recently began working with a dietitian to fine-tune her fueling strategy. Additionally, Mann practices yoga, which she believes has strengthened her physically and mentally. Her experience as a respiratory therapist has also taught her the importance of breathing and staying present, skills she applies during races to maintain a clear mindset and make better decisions.

Embracing the Challenge

As Mann prepares to take on the French Alps race, she hopes to inspire others to pursue their own challenges. Despite feeling intimidated by her first ultra, Mann has grown to love the sport and is now ready for her next big test. With her meticulous preparation, supportive footwear, and focused mindset, Mann is poised to tackle the iconic French Alps course and push herself to new heights.
