Altra and Topo Athletic have introduced their latest racing shoes, the Vanish Carbon 3 and Specter Elite. These models represent a significant shift for the two brands, adopting more mainstream super shoe features like carbon plates and high-tech foams while still offering the wide forefoot fit they are known for.

Both new models break from their brands' traditional formulas by incorporating a heel-to-toe drop and a pronounced rockered sole. Altra, which was acquired by VF Corporation, has introduced a 4mm drop option that is now its fastest-growing segment. Topo Athletic has offered various drops but remains on the low end of the spectrum. The rocker geometry is particularly extreme on the Specter Elite, with sharp upward curves at the heel and toe. The Vanish Carbon 3's rocker starts further back under the midfoot, creating a noticeable bump.

Modern Foam Upgrades Deliver Big Results

The midsole foams in both shoes have been upgraded for better performance. Topo Athletic moved from a PEBA foam in its previous Specter 2 model to an aliphatic TPU (A-TPU) foam in the Specter Elite. This A-TPU foam is formulated to be soft, light, and bouncy simultaneously. Altra's Vanish Carbon 3 now uses a PEBA foam sandwich around its carbon plate, a major upgrade from the previous TPE foam, offering improved cushioning and propulsion.

Despite both midsoles being exceptionally thick, nearing World Athletics limits, they provide distinct rides. The Runner's World tester found the Specter Elite to feel softer and bouncier, making it well-suited for long road distances. The Vanish Carbon 3 was described as stiffer and snappier, potentially offering better results for shorter, faster efforts.

They're Still Far Roomier Than Every Other Racer

These shoes remain standout options for runners seeking ample forefoot space, though their designs are more refined than earlier, exaggeratedly wide models. The Altra Vanish Carbon 3 is described as reined-in, lower-volume, and sleek from above. The Topo Specter Elite has a boxier forefoot with more room in both width and height, without feeling baggy.

Both shoes secure the midfoot and heel, but with different approaches. The Altra uses a minimal, track spike-like heel counter with a flexible, unpadded cup that wraps the foot. The Specter Elite employs a more traditional build with a stiffer insert and thicker padding around the collar.

Which Wide-Foot Racer Is Right for You?

The report provides a comparative breakdown of the shoes' strengths for different runner preferences.

For the lightest and most comfortable option, the tester recommends the Topo Specter Elite. For snappy speed, particularly on the track, the Altra Vanish Carbon 3 is the choice. Both shoes offer good stability. The Altra has an edge in allowing natural foot movement due to its forked carbon plate design. The tester, Jeff from Runner's World, concluded the Vanish Carbon 3 felt well-planted during a track workout featuring intervals at 10K and 5K effort paces.
