Dos Santos breaks 400m hurdles world record

Alison dos Santos of Brazil broke the men's 400m hurdles world record with a time of 45.80 at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich on August 27. He eclipsed the previous mark of 45.94 set by Norway's Karsten Warholm at the 2021 Olympics.

According to a report from Track and Field News, dos Santos had closed the stagger on Warholm by the fourth barrier and powered to a commanding win. The 2022 world champion attributed his performance to changes in training and a faster start. "We need to start faster and finish strong, and we were able to do it," he said. Warholm finished second in 46.69, a time only he, dos Santos, and Olympic champion Rai Benjamin have ever bettered. Nigeria's Nathaniel Ezekiel was third in 47.50.

Field Event Highlights

A world record was nearly matched in the pole vault, a non-Diamond League event. Sweden's Mondo Duplantis and Greece's Manolo Karalís engaged in a fierce battle. Both cleared 6.10 meters on first attempts. Karalís then made 6.20 meters, securing his position as the second-best vaulter ever. Duplantis responded by clearing 6.25 meters to win. Both athletes then missed three attempts at the world record height of 6.32 meters.

Duplantis, the two-time Olympic champion, said Karalís jumped "out of this world." Karalís called the competition "nuts" and said he believes he pushes Duplantis, who enjoys the pressure.

In the shot put, American Jordan Geist won his first Diamond League event with a personal best of 22.53 meters (73 feet, 11 inches). That mark moves him to seventh on the U.S. all-time list. Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell was second with 22.22 meters, and Italy's Leonardo Fabbri third with 22.16 meters. Greece's Miltiádis Tentóglou won the long jump with 8.45 meters, just ahead of Tajay Gayle's 8.43 meters.

Track Event Results

Kenny Bednarek of the United States won the 200 meters in a world-leading 19.62 seconds. South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile was second in 19.82. Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, said he focused on executing and getting ahead of the pack early.

In a non-Diamond League 800 meters, Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran a world-leading 1:41.76, holding off Algeria's Djamel Sedjati (1:41.83). The 1500 meters was won by American Cole Hocker in 3:31.71, outkicking Kenya's Phanuel Koech (3:31.84) and fellow American Yared Nuguse (3:31.85). Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, returning from an Achilles injury, finished fifth in 3:32.16.

Parker Wolfe of the United States won the 3000 meters in 7:27.43, breaking a meet record set in 1986 and becoming the third-fastest American ever. He used a 13.1-second final 100 meters to secure the win. Graham Blanks (7:27.92) and Australia's Cam Myers (7:27.97) followed closely.

Other Notable Performances

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the javelin with a throw of 92.07 meters, not far off his world-leading mark. Switzerland's Jason Joseph won the non-Diamond League 110m hurdles in 13.11 seconds, and Japan's Yuki Joseph Nakajima took the non-Diamond League 400 meters in 44.62 seconds.
