On Aug. 28, Adam Saltarelli finished his 21-day, marathon-a-day fundraiser run for Canadian Tire Jumpstart, having covered 550 miles (886 km) along Lake Ontario’s Canadian shoreline. He began the effort on Aug. 8 beneath the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge in Niagara-on-the-Lake and proceeded east toward the Thousand Islands. The project, named LO550, combined his route’s name with the distance he aimed to run.

Saltarelli’s method involved running an out-and-back marathon each day: starting from a marked point, he ran 21.1 km ahead, placed a stone to mark the spot, then returned to his starting point before moving his car forward to begin the next day from that marker. This meant his feet covered 550 miles while the car only advanced 275 miles along the shoreline, ensuring he never drove ahead of where he had run.

The Canadian Tire Jumpstart program assists with costs that prevent children from participating in sports, such as registration, equipment, and transportation. Saltarelli set a fundraising target of $5,550, and although final tallies were not yet complete at the time of reporting, he expected to surpass that amount.

An 18-year-old who has competed in track, wrestling, and mixed martial arts, Saltarelli said sports had profoundly shaped his identity. He told the Welland Tribune that athletics had “really made me into the person I am today.” His first marathon was completed two years prior at the Niagara Falls International Marathon, and in July of the same year, he had run 100 miles for Jumpstart, raising over $2,500.

Reflecting on that earlier effort, Saltarelli wrote on the LO550 website that completing 100 miles had demonstrated to him that his body was capable of “so much more.” His LO550 route took him through Hamilton, Toronto, Oshawa, Kingston, and Gananoque before reaching the 1000 Islands Tower, where he connected with supporters and attended Jumpstart events.

Looking ahead, Saltarelli mentioned plans to produce a documentary about his run and to enroll in business school, while also expressing interest in eventually running across the country. His Jumpstart campaign remained active, with donations and further information available through the LO550 website.
