Steeltown Canicross will hold its annual Murphy's Mission fundraising event on November 7. The race takes place at Christie Lake Conservation Area in Dundas, Ontario, to support Hamilton Animal Services.

What began as a small weekend gathering has grown into a community of more than 260 members. Over 40 dog-and-runner teams now regularly participate in the group's runs, according to its organizers.

The Origin of Murphy's Mission

The event is named for Murphy, the first dog from Hamilton Animal Services to join a group run. He was found abandoned in a field, requiring over two hours of effort by animal services staff to rescue him. Murphy then spent more than three months in the shelter without being adopted.

In July 2024, Steeltown Canicross took Murphy on a run and shared photos online. This exposure helped him find a permanent home. His story inspired the formal Murphy's Mission program, which gives shelter dogs a break and introduces them to potential adopters in an active setting.

Event Races and Activities

The November event features multiple race options for participants. Funds raised will be directed to Hamilton Animal Services.

Race OptionDescription
5K CanicrossA timed race for runner-and-dog teams.
10K CanicrossA longer timed race for runner-and-dog teams.
Human-Only RacesTimed 5K and 10K races for runners without dogs.
Non-Competitive WalkA casual walking option.

The Sport of Canicross

Canicross is cross-country running with a dog. A runner wears a waist belt connected by a bungee line to a harness on the dog, which runs ahead. The sport originated as dryland training for sled dogs. The Globe and Mail reports it has since become a recreational and competitive running activity in Canada, with clubs in several provinces.

Steeltown Canicross welcomes runners of all abilities and a wide variety of dogs, including reactive ones. The group also runs a weekly program with Hamilton Animal Services, taking shelter dogs for runs and trail outings. The registration page states that over 200 dogs have joined members on these outings in the past two years. Some members have fostered or adopted dogs they first met through the running program.
