Chase Jackson Breaks American Shot Put Record With 21.02m
Chase Jackson smashed the American and North American shot put records with a 21.02m throw at the ISTAF Berlin meeting, becoming the second woman in 14

American shot putter Chase Jackson launched a massive 21.02 meters (68 feet, 11.75 inches) on her first attempt at the ISTAF Berlin meeting, setting a new American and North American record. The two-time world champion's throw on August 30 broke her own previous American record of 20.95m and surpassed the long-standing North American mark of 20.96m set by Cuba's Belsy Laza in 1992.
"It was amazing. I have been waiting for a throw like this for so long," Jackson said, according to Track & Field News. "Having it on the first attempt was a relief." She noted she would train in Berlin before heading to the Diamond League Final in Brussels. Jackson's series was strong, featuring three other throws beyond 20 meters, including a 20.88m effort that ranks as the sixth-best of her career. She finished the competition more than three feet ahead of Canadian rival Sarah Mitton.
A Historic Barrier Broken
Jackson's 21.02m throw makes her just the second woman in the past 14 years to surpass the 21-meter barrier. Only Dutch record-holder Jessica Schilder, with a 21.09m throw in May, has thrown farther this season. This marks the first time since 1990 that two women have topped 21.00m in the same year. Jackson had been knocking on the door of the mark for years, with four meets at 20.90m or better over the past two seasons.
Other Berlin Highlights
The meeting at Olympiastadion featured several other notable performances. Australian Cam Myers won the men's 1500 meters in 3:30.96, just three days after finishing third in the Zürich 3000m. German athletes celebrated two home victories: European champion Gesa-Felicitas Krause set a world-leading time of 5:56.79 in the infrequently run women's 2000-meter steeplechase, while continental champ Julian Weber won the javelin with a throw of 89.54 meters (293 feet, 9 inches). American Marc Minichello achieved the second-best mark of his career with an 83.28m throw for third place.
