Emmanuel Kiprono signed pro deal with adidas in 2025
Kenyan distance star Emmanuel Kiprono, 17, has a professional contract with adidas, signed in 2025 through agent Eric Lilot.

Emmanuel Kiprono is already a professional athlete. According to his agent Eric Lilot, the 17-year-old Kenyan distance runner signed a contract with adidas in 2025.
This news comes after a LetsRun.com editorial suggested Kiprono should consider the NCAA development system at the University of Oregon for long-term success. The source, LetsRun.com, reports that Kiprono's professional status makes that path more complex.
World U20 Championships Performance
Kiprono was the standout distance runner at this summer's World U20 Championships in Eugene. He won the 3,000 meters by a massive 19-second margin. His time of 7:28.28 was just 0.09 seconds off Yomif Kejelcha's world U20 record.
The performance was notable for its aggressive pacing. Kiprono ran his second 400-meter lap in 55 seconds. He also covered the 1600-meter segment between the 400 and 2000-meter points in 3:53.
Current Status and Background
The young star attends St. Francis Kimuron High School near Iten, Kenya. He is coached by Boniface Limoh. Like another 17-year-old talent, Cooper Lutkenhaus, Kiprono ended his 2026 track season early after the World U20s. He returned to high school in Kenya instead of competing on the Diamond League circuit.
Kiprono also earned a silver medal in the U20 race at this year's World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee. Agent Eric Lilot told LetsRun.com that Kiprono will likely begin his 2027 season with cross country races in Europe.
NCAA Eligibility Context
Historically, a professional contract like Kiprono's with adidas would have made him ineligible for NCAA competition. The organization had strict amateurism rules. The landscape has shifted since 2021, when the NCAA allowed athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL).
The line between collegiate and professional athlete has blurred. Several Kenyan athletes have been granted NCAA eligibility despite racing overseas in professional gear. Former World U20 cross country champion Ishmael Kipkurui is one example. He won the NCAA 10,000-meter title last year for the University of New Mexico.
The NCAA has made further allowances. In 2024, NCAA 100-meter champion Louie Hinchliffe publicly signed a professional contract with Asics after winning the title. He ran as a professional in 2025. The NCAA still allowed him to return to competition with the University of Houston this year.
