Runner's World has selected nine top running shorts after three weeks of staff testing. The publication, which has tested gear since 1966, evaluated shorts for training, racing, and everyday runs, considering factors like chafing prevention, storage, and cooling.

Testers included runners of varying levels, ages, body types, and goals. The team assessed offerings from shoe brands, activewear specialists, and lesser-known companies to provide a range of styles and prices.

How The Shorts Were Selected

The testing process involved staff using the shorts during workouts ranging from trail running to marathon training. Runner's World aimed to gather well-rounded feedback to find shorts suitable for every type of runner.

Full Reviews Of Top Picks

Tracksmith's Session Shorts were named Best Overall and featured in the publication's Gear of the Year list. The latest 'Session 3.0' version fixes an issue from the older model by moving a zippered side pocket's girth to the back to prevent items from hitting the thigh. The updated waistband is more flexible and includes an internal drawstring. The silky material provides airflow, and three rear drop-in gel pockets aid fueling on long runs.

New Balance's RC Essential 3-inch short earned the Best Value title. Designed for racing, it features individual compartments along the waistband for separating gels and a zippered rear pocket. A tester said the apparel performed very well, noting they are adjustable, breathable, and offer inclusive sizing and ample storage. However, the same runner was confused about why there was only one pocket on one side. Janji's M's Multi Short 2-in-1 is the Best 2-in-1 selection. Long Brief 2 was also tested. Editor Ashley Tysiac said the apparel provided comfort and peace of mind for any workout duration or speed, changing her mind about 2-in-1 styles.

Key Features And Performance

Bandit's Men's Vanisher Half Tights are the Best Anti-Sweat Mark Shorts. Features Senior Editor Pavlina Cerna confirmed their performance, stating the apparel does exactly as it promises: it makes sweat vanish. After runs in 80-degree heat, there were no sweat marks. The apparel has seven waterproof pockets and silicone grippers on the cuffs to prevent the legs from sliding up. The Women's Vanisher 5-inch High Waist Compression Shorts are currently low in stock.

lululemon's Women's Hotty Hot High-Rise bottoms are the Best Racing Shorts. They are a classic flow model with mesh side panels and reflective detail. Storage is limited to a liner stash pocket and a zippered side pocket for keys and a card. The flat, high waistband has an interior infinity cord for adjustment. For men, the Pace Breaker Lined Short is recommended, available in five-, seven-, and nine-inch inseams with updated comfort and low-bounce hand pockets.

Smartwool's Active Lined model was praised for achieving a rare feat: not causing chafing despite being a flowy design. Senior Gear Editor Cat Bowen highlighted ample storage, a breathable liner, and the model's ability to stay in place without bunching. The liner wicks moisture effectively and resists odor, and the apparel launders well.
